How RecoveryWhiskers materialized

In early 2025, I was frustrated with the Greaseweazle software tools. I lost data when it crashed or I tried to parse data on the track boundaries. At first I tried to hack it, but it was soon very clear that this won't get me anywhere near the features I wanted. This is when I made a prototype of RecoveryWhiskers. From the start I wanted to make it what Greaseweazle host software wasn't: Operate flux based by default, have format auto-detection and will never crash on whatever happens with the connected hardware.

Since then I have bought more than 40 floppy drives and thousands of floppies and I am still looking for more floppy formats I don't have yet. I am still looking for those and that means buying sets of floppies to find what I am looking for or other interesting things to archive.

I lost a big chunk of my income mid 2026 and would kindly ask for donations for moving the software forward.

What's next in development

I am currently working on a hardware configuration and testing window in RecoveryWhiskers.

I am also planning to make a small batch of Greaseweazles with additional USB-PD port and additional hardware hacking capabilities. I eventually want to make a custom hardware for floppy drives but I don't want to promise too much at this point.
